The First 24 Hours After Crop Damage
Why the First Day Can Make or Break an Investigation
Every Investigation Begins With Evidence
Whether the damage involves:
  • herbicide drift
  • fertilizer injury
  • wildfire
  • livestock trespass
  • hail
  • flooding
  • utility construction
  • pipeline work
  • road construction
  • chemical spills
  • mysterious crop failure
the investigation begins exactly the same way:
Collect and preserve evidence before anything changes.

Step 1 — Don't Panic
Most people want to immediately:
  • spray something
  • till the area
  • reseed
  • mow
  • harvest
  • remove damaged plants
Unfortunately these actions may destroy the best evidence.
Unless safety is an issue, leave everything exactly as you found it until it has been documented.

Step 2 — Record the Date and Time
Write down
  • date
  • exact time
  • who discovered the damage
  • weather conditions
  • wind direction
  • temperature
  • cloud cover
  • recent rainfall
These details can become surprisingly important later.

Step 3 — Take Hundreds of Photos
One of the biggest mistakes investigators see is not taking enough photographs.
Digital photos are essentially free.
Take:
Wide-angle
Show the entire field.
Show where the damage begins and ends.

Medium distance
Document patterns.
Look for:
  • spray overlaps
  • strips
  • wheel tracks
  • edge effects
  • wind direction

Close-up
Photograph:
  • leaves
  • stems
  • flowers
  • roots
  • weeds
  • surrounding vegetation
Include both healthy and damaged plants.

Step 4 — Never Photograph Only the Damage
This is extremely common.
Always include healthy plants.
Healthy plants become your comparison.
Without comparisons, many photographs lose much of their value.

Step 5 — Turn On GPS
Every photo should include location information whenever possible.
Modern phones can automatically save:
  • GPS coordinates
  • date
  • time
Later, investigators can recreate exactly where each photograph was taken.
Dedicated GPS-enabled cameras or smartphone apps that embed coordinates directly on the image can make this process even more robust.

Step 6 — Take Notes Immediately
Don't trust memory.
Write everything down.
Examples:
"I first noticed yellowing on the west side."
"The neighbour sprayed yesterday afternoon."
"Wind was from the northwest."
"Crop looked normal three days ago."
Small details often become major evidence months later.

Step 7 — Identify Everyone Present
Record:
  • landowner
  • tenant
  • neighbours
  • custom applicators
  • employees
  • contractors
Write names while everyone remembers who was there.

Step 8 — Preserve Physical Evidence
Don't remove everything.
Sometimes investigators need:
  • plant samples
  • soil samples
  • water samples
  • seed
  • fertilizer
  • chemical containers
If samples are collected, they should be properly labeled and handled to reduce the risk of contamination. For investigations that may involve insurance or legal proceedings, maintaining a documented chain of custody from collection to the laboratory is an important part of preserving the integrity of the evidence.

Step 9 — Don't Assume You Know the Cause
This may be the hardest step.
People naturally jump to conclusions.
"I know the neighbour drifted."
"I know it was fertilizer."
"I know it was insects."
Professional investigators begin differently.
They ask:
What does the evidence tell us?
Sometimes the obvious answer is correct.
Sometimes it isn't.

Step 10 — Contact the Right Professionals
Depending on the situation:
  • Professional Agrologist
  • Forensic Agrologist
  • lawyer
  • insurance company
  • laboratory
  • surveyor
  • environmental consultant
The earlier qualified professionals become involved, the more evidence can usually be preserved.

Mistakes That Cannot Be Undone
Some mistakes permanently reduce the value of an investigation:

❌ Spraying the crop
❌ Tilling the field
❌ Mowing vegetation
❌ Cleaning equipment
❌ Throwing away chemical containers
❌ Failing to identify witnesses
❌ Waiting several weeks before taking photographs
❌ Relying only on memory

Why Independent Investigations Matter
A forensic agrologist's role is not to prove one party right or wrong. The role is to examine the available evidence objectively and determine what conclusions can reasonably be supported.
Independent investigations are valuable because they rely on documented observations, measurements, photographs, sampling, laboratory analysis where appropriate, and established agricultural science rather than assumptions or advocacy. That objectivity strengthens the credibility of the findings, whether they are used to resolve a dispute informally, support an insurance claim, or assist a court or tribunal.

Final Thoughts
The first 24 hours after crop damage are often the most important period of the entire investigation. Evidence begins to change immediately, and opportunities to document the original conditions can be lost quickly.
Careful notes, comprehensive photographs, accurate locations, and timely involvement of qualified professionals create a stronger factual record. Even when a claim is never filed, good documentation helps determine what happened and supports better decisions for recovery and future management.
